Disappearing fast, the birds who are the soundtrack of summer
The chorus of warbling, twittering and cooing that is the distinctive sound of the British summer is in danger of disappearing for ever.
Some of our best-known visitors are among those rapidly vanishing from the skies as bird numbers go into freefall.
In fact, migratory birds which call this island home make up eight of the ten species that have declined the most in the last 15 years.
These include the cuckoo, turtle dove and nightingale, whose lilting songs spell summer for so many.
Because of the huge distances they cover each year and the variety of countries they visit on their way here, finding a simple reason for the decline is impossible.
Habitat loss, illegal hunting and climate change are among the factors to blame, according to the 2010 Breeding Bird Survey.
Whatever the reason, Britain lost about three quarters of its turtle doves between 1995 and 2010 and almost half of its cuckoos.
Over the same period, nightingales and wood warblers more than halved, as did whinchats and yellow wagtails.
The decline has been described as 'one of the greatest crises in modern conservation' and is putting the birds at risk of extinction in many areas.
Martin Davies from the RSPB is in no doubt of the effect on some of our best-loved birds.
'All the countries along their migration routes have a shared responsibility to look after them. It will be a race against time to tackle these declines.'
