Common origin for HIV-fighting antibodies
Abstract:A new study expands the group of known antibodies from the human body that can disarm a broad spectrum of HIV viruses. Although these antibodies only occur naturally in a small subset of HIV-infected patients, the new findings suggest that these “broadly neutralizing” antibodies are more common in some of these patients than previously thought. They also share key similarities and are potent, with relatively low concentrations required to neutralize the virus. This may be good news for efforts to develop and HIV vaccine that would coax the body to produce such antibodies, or possibly for HIV therapies, suggest Johannes Scheid and coauthors. The researchers developed a new, more sensitive test for identifying antibodies and used it on serum samples from four HIV-infected individuals known to have high levels of broadly neutralizing antibodies. They cloned 576 new HIV antibodies, which were derived from a small number of germ-line immunoglobulin genes. Despite undergoing extensive mutation, these antibodies appear similar in the way they bind to the virus.
