I would like to extend many warm thanks to my chair supervisor, Professor W.R. Levick, for his constant support and encouragement, perspicacious criticisms, stimulating discussions, invaluable suggestions, and his help dated back to the time when I was still in China. From him, I see an image of an outstanding scientist, an image I will be trying to achieve in the coming years of my career, and from him, I learnt the way of doing science.
I would like to thank my supervisors Dr. David Vaney and Dr. Geoff Henry, and my adviser Dr. Srinivasan, for their support, kind help and a lot of discussions. Also a lot of thanks to Dr. Ian Morgan, for discussion, for reading my draft and for all the trips to conferences which were full of fun, and to Dr. Arnie Leon, for his expert advisers in animal maintenance.
