2012年SCI收录至少有一位中国学者（不包括台湾地区）发表的论文183,216篇（截至到2013年2月1日按出版年统计），其中学术论文170,857篇、综述4,491篇、会议摘要4,253篇、会议论文1,629篇、社论1,541篇、通讯1,409篇、更正523篇、新闻115篇、丛书58篇、传记22篇、书评4篇、书目1篇等。
2012年中国学者在6531种SCI期刊上发表了176,757篇论文（统计学术论文、综述、通讯、会议论文），发文量居前十位的期刊见表1、发文量居前100位的期刊见表2。发文量排名第一的为Plos One《公共科学图书馆•综合》刊登了中国学者发表的3481篇论文，该刊为OA期刊，论文的标准收费1350美元，如果以每篇出版费1350美元计算，2012年中国学者交给Plos One的出版费高达469万美金。有意思的是2011年前连续几年中国学者发文量排名第一的为Acta Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online《结晶学报，E辑：结构报告网络版》，2011年刊登了中国学者发表的1753篇论文，该刊2002年被汤森路透（ Thomson Reuters ）剔除。
